Holding Breath After Inhale And/or Exhale

What difference does the effect of the time you hold your breath after inhale and/or exhale have on your body?

Simply, breathing in increases heart rate; breathing out decreases it. The exhale is the relaxation part, where you also relax muscles etc.

But what about holding your breath? Lots of apps etc have different routines and times for the in/hold/out/hold cycle, but no real explanation as to why they are the way they are. I saw one saying longer hold with breath in is more for energy, longer with breathe out is more for relaxation, which kinda makes sense, but is there a way to optimise the ratios for different outcomes?

Thanks!

  • Check out Buteyko breathing.  It is the opposite of deep breathing and has great benefits for relaxation, sedation and reducing anxiety and panic attacks.

  • 4, 4, 4, 4. :)

    4 in, 4 hold, 4 out, 4 hold.
