Shingles? Valtrex? What Would You Do?

Hey there! I am 46 and at about age 36 I got shingles. It's rare for people that young to get it... At first I thought  I had 2 big, wide, weird pimples brewing on my forehead... When they started to pound with pain a few days later, I went to the Doctor. After an initial misdiagnosis, she realized I had shingles. It sucked, but it went away.

Flash forward 10 years to now. I'm almost finished with a 2+ week head & chest cold. I'm not congested, I'm not coughing any more phlegm but I'm still coughing - now it's a dry cough. Two nights ago I noticed something funny happening on my forehead... inches from the spot from 10 years ago. It's similar, but higher, near my hairline, and it's much smaller (now at least). It is a slight swelling that is not noticeable (yet) to the eye, but I feel it with my fingers as if I'd hit my head. As far as progression....  the area seems warmer now, but not larger, than when I discovered it.

So, I might have freaking Shingles again! Apparently if you take Valtrex 48-72 hours after the first symptoms you can nip it in the bud. What would you guys do? For all I know this actually is not Shingles at all, but an insect bite, or maybe I did hit my head slightly and don't remember.... Would you take Valtrex just to be safe? What would you do?

THANK YOU!

    Sunlight, UV-B exposure.

Look into vitamin C to increase endogenous interferon and lysine to prevent viral replication of herpes zoster.

Of course run everything by a doctor.

  • Taking L-lysine @ 1g on an empty stomach has been shown effective by clinical research.

THANKS, guys!!! Emergency clinic doc put me on a valtrex-type thing, just in case it is shingles. He can't tell for sure but he doesn't want me to risk it.

Jason - Regarding L-lysine- should I still try it, or is that moot now I'm on the big guns?

John - I"m already on 10 mg of C/day (due to head/chest cold) should I add? Should I get sun/UVB still or is that moot now?

  • Even if you get the shingles vaccine, there is no guarantee you will not get shingles.
If you think you may have shingles you should walk into Urgent Care or your physician as soon as possible. The sooner treatment is started the more effective it will be. The goal is to start treatment before 72 hours of symptoms. If you’re unable to get an appointment with your own family doctor, you can still visit a walk-in clinic. I recommend this one if you are in FL https://www.yourdoctorsurgentcare.com they really helped me when my doctor couldn't get an appointment with me

  • google the bht book by steven fowkes its free

  • It’s a bit expensive but allitech is great for viral or bacterial infections. It’s a concentrated garlic drink and works wonders. I was recommended it by a homeopath after having glandular fever 5 years prior. I felt it really helped clean out some underlying rubbish from my body. I’d recommend a teaspoon in water evening and night. Best of luck
