Iodine

I did read on bulletproof about iodine, and realized I almost didnt get any the past few years since I didnt eat bread and used no iodine salt. So I will start supplementing with it given my CFS. I did read on BP about using 1mg a day, while they recommend 150mcg a day, so 15%. Normally I don't care about this, but now I did read "it might lead to thyroid damage if u start supplementing urself with iodine". Anyone experience with this or advice?

  • I do know that the thyroid damage you are refering to is when you have an autoimmune disease such as hashimoto, in this case supplementing with iodine could exacerbate the problem.

It's better to check you thyroid levels as well as you thyroid anti bodies before supplementing with iodine.

Definitely don't start off at 1mg per day if you've been moderately deficient for a long period of time. Start at the daily value and work your way up slowly.

Thanks to the internet, health experts, and my unending curiosity, I have overcome: excessive sweating (adrenal fatigue), anxiety and panic attacks, extremely high estrogen levels (man boobs), chronic brain fog (yeast overgrowth), depression, and am currently battling SIBO (took it from being so bloated it felt like my stomach skin was going to rip, slept 2 hours per night for a week because of upset stomach and being chronically fatigued to very mild, manageable but still annoying symptoms) and currently battling sleep deprivation/insomnia probably due to the SIBO/Leaky Gut and resulting histamine intolerance.

  • I can't check it since I am in cognitive therapy so they believe its in my brain.

I will start slowly with 150mcg, how would u build ur way to 1mg?
  • And before they decided that cognitive therapy was good they did all the std tests what it possibly could be (so also thyroid), and they didn't find anything off. But they also said that about the magnesium, vitamin d and b12 and with every one of those I still took I felt better so that is why I wanna start with iodine as well.

Iodine definitely has a lot of pros, especially with mental focus and clarity, but there can also be some cons depending on the individual. I can't really give you any specific advice due to your CFS, but if you want to start supplementing with iodine, the most common way to build up is to start off at a dosage for a month, then double it each consecutive month and monitor how you feel until you've built up to 1mg.

  • lol, I dived right into it, I took 3 drops of the detoxadine iodine which was the recommend dose, then jumped to 8 drops, and then 10 drops, which totals to about 4.5 mg of iodine, I didn't feel any ill effects. My blood work before supplementing read that I was borderline hypothyroid and now I'm feeling actually better than before supplementing with iodine, don't how much my thyroid improved as I haven't tested for it again, though.

  • Allright thanks guys, thanks. I did search it a bit, and according to this thread:

It turns out that you indeed have to double after each month according to a certain book, but that you can start with anything below 1mcg. Therefore I will start with 500mcg, and after one month do 1mg. Thanks again. I am really curious what this will do, esp since I take magnesium malate since today as well, which might help with CFS. Normal magnesium helped too, but apparently malate is better for my specific issues. One time...
