Stopped Eating Butter - Had An Hrv Breakthrough

This may be a controversial post but there could be really good info here so I want to share it with this community.  I've been seeing a holistic medicine doctor for a few months to try and figure out why I haven't lost a pound in six months after losing 20+ my first couple of months on the bulletproof diet.  As many of you know from reading here, I follow the green side of the BP diet pretty rigorously, have a well-developed supplement regime, pay very close attention to my sleep, and have a daily HRV practice.  I also exercise enough that all of these things put together should intuitively be moving me towards my ideal weight, but I'm sitting about 50 lbs away and haven't moved for the last 6 months.  My BPC recipe calls for 5 tbsps of butter and 75ml of Brain Octane.

My doctor has come to the conclusion that I have a yeast issue and suggested, among other things, a strict elimination diet for a month.  I was ready for 99% of this elimination except for butter - I almost threw a tantrum right in front of the doc.  He made some good points - notably that yeast usually also means a leaky gut, and one might become allergic to anything consumed regularly while having a leaky gut - maybe bullshit, but I agreed to do it for a month, today being day 7.  I haven't "felt" any problems except that I'm hungrier as I figure out how to get my fats in but....

...I had a state change in my emWave scores that started the day I stopped eating butter.  My last month of emWave looks like, where 2/20 is day 1 without butter.  I'm not drawing causation, but I can't ignore it either.  I'll report back after I've added butter back and see if it makes a difference.

  • Sorry - it looked like a perfect table in the preview - I'll try and figure out how to display this better.

tldr - My average coherence went from low 3 to low 4.  Change started the day I stopped eating butter.  Don't think it was causal but can't ignore the data.

  • 5 tablespoons?! geez man. i was doing 2 for quite a while and dropped down to 1 because i realized i was eating way more fat than necessary based on The Template (you know, Jason's...you should name that thing). I have lost a couple pounds since doing this...not sure if its just natural fluctuation.

  • btw - in case anybody is wondering, BPC is barely palatable with just MCT oil and not butter.  If I didn't flat out need all my C8 I would never power it down.  No matter how long I run my Vitamix, they separate pretty much immediately after blending is done.  I tried using an avocodo one day and got pudding.  I'm now using coconut milk and it works very well - not my favorite from a nutrition perspective but I haven't found anything else I can use so it will do until this experiment is over.

  • really? i do mct/coffee without butter sometimes if i'm about to train and want coffee and energy but not the long digestion time that comes with butter, and i've grown to appreciate it. i find it easier to notice the subtleties of the flavor of the coffee. it does have a weird film at the top actually seems to emulsify better than when i add  ghee for some reason.

More data - after seeing the doctor today, I got my labs back.  One of the storylines (the one that pertains to this thread) is that I have great O3 levels, but my relative O6 was too low.  I didn't think this was possible as Dave is always bragging about his O3/O6 ratio.  Eliminating butter for a month and substituting with nuts & seeds is right in line with this data and when I bring back butter, I'll try just doing 1 or 2 tbsps in my BPC and then continuing with the nuts & seeds.

There is much more from the data - I'm thinking of putting together a large set of posts regarding everything I'm doing and the data behind it in the quantified self section.  I haven't met many people in my situation, but I'd guess that people might be shy to admit that they are doing everything right and not getting anywhere.

I highly recommend that everybody find a good functional medicine doctor - it is worth making a priority.

Same here, when i drink the coffee just after blending everything is cool, but it always goes away.

I just have a thermal cup and shake it to froth it up a minimum

    Interesting thread.

Have you ever tried mixing up your fasting schedule for weight loss, like substituting lunch for BPC a few times a week?

  • What o3/o6 ratio is your doctor indicating that you need to have?

    Most interesting! Thanks for sharing!

I've been doing an elimination style diet in an effort to heal my gut and keep flare-ups of an autoimmune issue down. I suspect I have issues with yeast and SIBO too, though I haven't got a good doctor like yours haha. The only thing I've refused to give up is butter. Nonetheless, I had a slight flare-up of said autoimmune condition just the other day and have still struggled to get rid of a persistent balantis thrush. All this while cutting out the forbidden foods (nightshades, eggs, nuts, dairy, etc).  I suspect that a problem with yeast lies at the heart of this balantis break-out, and I think I'm just going to cut out the butter and perhaps use some prescription Clotrimazole ointment to try and rid myself of it once and for all. Maybe it'll help. My weightloss has slowed a bit as well.

Anyhow, please keep posting! I love butter, but it might not love me... :(

  • Interesting, I have been doing the opposite, I have increased butter to 5-6 TBSP and dropped MCT Oil down to half a teaspoon or so. I was getting out of body and dizziness from too much MCT oil.

I'm going to enlighten you as to why you haven't lost weight:

-Because calories in vs. calories out DOES matter.

However, it only matters within any given system.

If you eat all of the same foods all of the time, and are not losing weight, you need to lower your caloric intake. It's extremely simple. You lost weight while adjusting to the right kinds of foods on your new "diet", but once you have been on that diet a while, the way to lose or gain weight is through calorie adjustment.

  • Both Paul Jaminet and Chris Kresser include butter as a potential culprit connected to various sub-optimal health outcomes.  They both say that its the proteins, so maybe try ghee?

Interesting about the yeast... becuase I had a chest yeast infection FOR YEARS after starting a mostly ketogenic diet... when I added back carbs, it disappeared.  Jaminet explained that my body was unable to create some sort of fungus killing stuff (RAS I think it was)in his book, but I'm not smart enough to relate it with the correct vocabulary... sorry.

  • SkeletorSkeletor The Conqueror Worm ✭✭✭

More and more I'm leaning towards ditching keto and giving the Perfect Health Diet a try. Jaminet seems to have a really good grasp of biochemistry. I can't do nightshades so potatoes are off the menu for me, however I'm going to increase my white rice consumption and see what happens.

    inb4 I turn into a yeast monster

Do you need (müssen) to lose weight? or do you want (wollen) to lose weight?

I'm just wondering... do you track your nutrition?

I was able to eat tons of fat if I kept protein moderate and carbs low without gaining a pound. But I wasn't lossing. Just stable.

Now I have reduced my fat intake (kept protein and carbs roughly the same) to create a slight caloric deficit, and I am loosing.

What do you think of this?

    No sorcery, just science.

  • I've put myself in caloric deficit for periods of time in the last 6 months.  Many days I drink my BPC which is about 1000 calories, and not much else all day - not to be in a deficit but just because I forget to eat.  It made no difference whether I was low cal or high cal.

I tried low protein, and even tried upping my carbs.

My doctor is convinced that I'll lose the weight.  The basic protocol is iodine to detox halides and to kill the yeast.  His concerns are around whether it will stay off or whether I have so little control over my environment that I'll put the toxic load back on.  We'll see.

What sort of job do you have that your employer would ask you to lose weight more quickly, Marina? That sounds rough.
