Xylitol's Effects On Collagen Sythesis?

I recently read a study concluding that in rats, xylitol increases new collagen synthesis. Can anyone confirm this or give more information? I'm thinking about combining Upgraded Collagen with xylitol in a drink before bed. Thank you.

  • Sweet Man!  I currently add 3 tsps of xylitol to my bpc and have been adding in gelatin from great lakes, currently out of upgraded collagen which is amazing.  Good Find!  The Xylitol I have been using is derived from 100% birch sap/bark.

  • Which brand of Xylitol would you recommend, or does it not really matter? Thanks.

  • Cool Study!

    Does anyone know glycemic impact of xylitol?  I have heard dave and the BP community say zero, but I have hear other reports that say differently.  Anyone have any hard data?

    The international database claims zero, but I disagree.  The using University of Sydney's formula of:

         GI = GL / (100) * Net Carbs

    and the information on provided by this study:

    Shows that for thirty grams of xylitol has a glycemic index of thirteen.

    Xylitol is also a FODMAP and supplementation of too much can cause excess gas, diarrhea, and at its very worse SIBO.

    If you are that worried about collagen synthesis, take vitamin C and copper glycinate and you should be good to go.

  • John,

    How much xylitol will significantly contribute SIBO? Does the source of xylitol (birch, corn, etc) affect SIBO?I typically add half a tablespoon in my drink.

    The source doesn't mater since xylitol is a polyol. I wouldn't take xylitol with probiotics that is for sure. If your digestion is fine more then likely you won't develop SIBO from xylitol.

    So this post prompted me to finally try xylitol. USA birch kind.

    Big mistake. Both my wife and I had major stomach issues. I think I'll skip it.

    We had a tiny amount too, like 1/2 spoon each
