caffeine decreases neurogenesis

When reading Brant Cortright Book "The Neurogenesis Diet & Lifestyle"
https://www.amazon.de/dp/0986149209/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_dp_T2_iBStzbE2WYP43

There are two references which shows that caffein decreases neurogenesis:

1.
Wentz, C.T., Magavi, S.S. (May-Jun 2009). "Caffeine alters proliferation of neuronal precursors in the adult hippocampus."
Neuropharmacology. 56(6-7):994-1000. don: 10.1016/j.neuropharm.2009.02.002.Epub 13 Feb 209

2.
Han,M.E., Park,K.H.,Baek, S.Y., Kim, B. S., Kim, J.B., Kim, H.J., Oh, S. O. (18 May 2007). "Inhibitory effects of caffeine on hippocampal neurogenesis and function." Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications. 356(4):976-80. Pub 26 Mar 2007.

He was also a guest in Dave Asprey podcast:

What do you think .. Looks like that Coffee is only a short time stimulant but has not so good longtime effects on the brain
and decrease neurogenesis.

Is there something to counter this bad effect ?

Coffee and caffeine are not the same thing. There studies that point to negatives of caffeine while coffee as pointing out the opposite.
This is one of those studies: https://nutritionandmetabolism.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s12986-017-0162-x

But I haven't read anything about coffee and neurogenesis.

  • Hope you are right but "Brant Cortright" didn't differentiated between coffee and caffeine. Even chocolate has caffeine very similar to coffee so also has to be prevented to have higher neurogenesis.

  • Dave said to this, that you need to drink 7 cups of coffee a day to qualify for this potential side effect.

Np, I asked this exact question on his Facebook page, and he replied that. I believe it was the vitamin coffee post, not from too long ago. Check it out

  • Thanks, I attached the answer of Dave:
