I'm On The Butter Treadmill Now!

I’d like to describe what’s going on with me and butter and see if anyone out there has had a similar situation ...

When I first started out on BPC, I was a little timid about lumping in copious amounts of butter because it just felt weird. My whole life I’d been taught, incorrectly, that this type of saturated fat is bad you. So I tip toed in …

No worries though, I didn’t spontaneously combust or anything like that … It actually went great! But I quickly started to get hungry long before my lunch break (was that the MCT?). I reasoned that more butter would help this, and it did. I was now comfortably up to about a quarter inch slice off the end of the Kerry Gold bar each morning and it was tiding me over until about noon. Not too shabby!

(Side note: I don’t put all of this directly into my coffee. In my opinion, that much butter would mess up the awesome taste and balance of my BPC, so I put about 2/3 of that goodness directly into my mouth and then sometimes do a Real Salt chaser. One dash right into my pie hole! You get to loving this actually! But people do freak when they witness it.)

Here’s where the fun starts though. Eventually I start to get hungrier earlier in the morning. So, the butter isn’t holding me over as long as it was when I first upped my dose. Tolerance?

I now use a half inch wedge each morning. That was working well and getting me to about 1:00pm without too much hunger, but now even that amount is starting to leave me wishing for some sockeye salmon much earlier than I’d like.

What I’m wondering is if our bodies just adjust to whatever we give it and recalibrate itself, making that the new normal. At this rate, I’ll be up to a stick and a half of grass fed cow butter per day and my body will still be demanding more. What would happen if I ever decided to give it a rest? Would my body eat itself whilst on the prowl for still more saturated fat?

Give yourself a few weeks and see how it changes, you don't lose anything by trying it out.

The way I see it is the body needs the good fats and when it finally gets huge amounts of them it wants more and more then after some time it gets satisfied and realises that it's getting a constant supply to use for nerves, hormones and the myriad other things that require fat in the body. When these needs are satisfied you should experience less and less such cravings, at least in my opinion. I think eating more butter for a couple of weeks you are not risking anything. One inch wedge doesn't even seem that terribly much for me. :D

If the hunger doesn't go away after a few weeks then I don't know but the answer is probably to eat more. :D

  • Think you'll find your hunger is just your stomach being empty. Get used to it, it's not that bad, especially as you'll eat before you starve! You've not mentioned how much MCT you are using!

Doubt you've experienced an empty stomach too much in your life. Most of the west doesn't and aren't happy unless they are digesting something.

p.s. The more butter in your coffee the better. I'm tempted to add a whole stick of Kerry Gold, but have only done a quarter (62g) so far.

  • Thanks guys for the vote of confidence ... in fact, hold my hat, I'm diving into the butter vat head first. Yeah, I just must not be getting enough. When you say stick of butter, you mean the old, Land O' Lakes size, right? Not the Kerry Gold bar which is, like, three of those lesser sticks. When I say I eat half inch off the Kerry Gold Bar ... it's the one that's about three Land O' Lakes bars ... any hoo ...

I use between one and two tablespoons of MCT (now brain octane) in my coffee and generally speaking, don't have any trouble with that ... anymore ... the brain octane stuff was weird there for a while, but I seem to have adjusted.

I really think I just needed to hear that others are downing this much butter and living to blog about it. Thanks.

  • Kerry Gold is 250g, which I've cut into 4 and used one of those in mine (62.5g), which is the most I've done. I'm currently doing 42g which is a bar cut into 6. So yeah, wanna dare to try a whole stick ;-)

Big difference between 1 and 2 tablespoons of MCT oil (15ml - 30ml) in my experience. I've been using 30ml with 42g daily.

I also add cocoa nibs, cocoa butter and a little cocoa powder, then sprinkle cinnamon and vanilla powder on top.

You can't start kids on the good things early enough. ;)

I put half a stick in my coffee and 3 tablespoons of MCT when I make it. I used to put a whole stick, but it became too expensive. I never had any hunger issues while on BPIF though :D
